City Centre Chaplaincy -
A Service in the heart of Bristol
Bob Mills was appointed to the post of City Centre Chaplain in 1987 to work
in the retail sector and the business community.
Born in Bristol he trained at Bristol Baptist College and served as a Baptist
minister in Yeovil, Birmingham and Keynsham before returning to his hometown.
During his ministry Bob has gained experience as a hospital chaplain and worked
closely with a local GP.
Appointed by the Baptist Church he seeks to work in relation to the other
churches and agencies.
As Chaplain Bob is:-
- a familiar figure in the shops and offices of central Bristol.
- privileged to share the happy moments of people's lives - such as marriages
and the birth of children.
- available for confidential conversations - whether work-related or personal.
- able to bring support and encouragement in times of illness and any of
the other crises that life brings.
- with people in times of bereavement and is often invited by relatives
to conduct a funeral service.
- able to share Bristol's experience with other cities as he is invited
to other towns and cities.
- able, when requested, to provide a bridge with people's local home churches
and ministers/clergy.
- involved in pressures found in the changes in the business community at
many different levels.

- He works from an office in Broadmead Baptist Church.
- He is often in the Undercroft at lunch-time. The Undercroft is located
in the Church. It provides a comfortable place for people to bring their
lunch.

The Chaplaincy and Broadmead Baptist Church
The Chaplaincy was started by Broadmead Baptist Church in 1987 with support
from the other City Centre Churches.
The chaplaincy was originally funded by a grant from the Baptist Union. Today
a partnership of the Baptist Union, Broadmead Baptist Church, the West of England Baptist Association and the City Centre Trust (see below) fund the work
The Bristol City Centre Chaplaincy Trust, representing the city centre churches and the business community,
has been established to ensure continued funding and to support the main object
of the Trust, which is the provision of one or more Christian chaplains to
serve the business community in the City of Bristol, their employees and families.
With this in mind the Trustees require to raise funds and invites contributions
from the business community.
