The values that shape who we are, what we do and how we do it.

WORD

We worship Jesus Christ, who is God’s Word to us and defines all reality. We treasure scripture as God’s Word, living and active, showing us Christ. We prioritise the preaching and teaching of God’s Word, and believe that God’s ways are best.

PRAYER

We know that we can do nothing independently of God, and we seek Him to lead us in all things. Praying together as a church is the most important thing we can do together!

FAMILY

We recognise the immense significance and importance of the body of Christ. We want to be a family marked by real, honest, authentic relationship with one another, open to God’s Spirit bringing clarity, faith and repentance.

MISSION

We follow God’s call to share the good news of Jesus Christ with Bristol and beyond. We show God’s love by responding to practical needs as well as proclaiming truth.

TRANSFORMATION

We are convinced that God’s plan for His people and His church is that they will become more like His Son, Jesus. We believe that this change doesn’t happen by chance, so we seek to promote and nurture growth in the Christian life.

Followers of Jesus have been meeting in Broadmead since 1640. It was founded by a small group of believers headed up by a formidable woman called Dorothy Hazzard. The birth of the first Dissenting Church in Bristol came out of a desire to be able to worship God in a way that was patterned on the Early Church in the Bible.  In its early years the church was violently persecuted, the leaders of the church were particularly targeted and spent months in prison, some even died as a result. Many of the women of the church used to rope themselves together on the stairs to slow the Sheriff’s men down, to give time for the pastor to hide. These brave women were beaten and dragged down the stairs, but they were determined not to back down.

Some of the best known Broadmead names include William Knibb (who campaigned successfully against slavery within the colonies), Joshua Marshman (who assisted William Carey in the establishment of the Baptist Missionary Society in India) and Edward Terrill (who financed the establishment of the world's first training establishment for Free Church ministers, that eventually became the Bristol Baptist College).
